Engravings

The holdings of the preachers’ seminary include an extensive collection of copperplate engravings. They originate from the preacher’s seminary’s own collection and from the estate of Max Senf.  The collection comprises at least 350 sheets. One focus is on the depictions of theologians of the 16th to 18th centuries. The collection is supplemented by numerous engravings with depictions of Philipp Melanchthon and from the life of Martin Luther.

The engravings collection has not yet been indexed, but can be viewed on request and made available for research purposes. If you have any questions, please contact info@rfb-wittenberg.de. You can get a first insight into the collection here.

Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) was the most important actor and author of the Reformation, along with Martin Luther. The collection of graphics owned by the preacher’s seminary and included in the RFB holdings is correspondingly extensive. They often show Melanchthon as a scholar with a book, dressed in a robe and usually with emaciated features.
